Do you collect circulating coinage?
I wanted to share a fun experience I had the past few weeks with my daughter. We bought a couple of Whitman Jefferson Nickel books, one book covering years 1962-1995, the other 1996 to present. Over the past couple weeks we have been buying boxes of nickels from the bank to sort out the years/mintmarks we need for the books. It took us three $100 boxes of nickels to completely fill up both books. We also got three war nickels and one 1920-D buffalo nickel in VG condition (worth about $15). Overall this was a fun experience and cost us nothing more than $2.99 per book plus $.05 for each coin. I feel an odd sense of satisfaction now that I have two complete coin books, plus the quality time with the kids isn't too bad either! :ok:

Well done, MF! :coolbeer: IMVHO, I think kids exposed to numismatics might have a greater appreciation of money later in life. At any rate, sounds like some quality time.
My daughter didn't have any interests in numis, but we would do weekend science projects, like extracting DNA from frozen peas. That was a lot of fun. |
Re: Do you collect circulating coinage?
yep
I have whitman folders for 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cent. All are probably roughly 90% full, just missing a select few in each folder. Overall it's a fun way to deal with excess coinage. (I'll probably just stick with post64 coinage as enjoy getting it all at face value and know I'd never pay the prices for some of those low minted coins...I'm a perfectionist at things like this and would be troubled by missing only a few coins) |
Re: Do you collect circulating coinage?
Congrats on filling the books.
I received a few pre-64 books from a member here for my daughters. The gent was nice enough to refuse payment. We've been filling it with scap silver that I've been buying anyway. Hopefully filling these books become a lifetime thing for them. As a homeschooler, it's a good way to hold a year... history in your hand. As a child I thought holding a coin that was made in the year Pearl Harbor was bombed or a grandparent was born was fascinating. |
Re: Do you collect circulating coinage?
I have Dansco folders for my coin roll hunting half dollar finds and a couple cheap ones for my dimes. Kennedy is all full except for about half of the modern silver proofs and the '08 & '09 clad proofs. Franklin has only been lacking the dreaded '55 for over a year now- I think I'll find it soon, I can smell it. My Walker book is lacking alot but I am still amazed how well its going from roll hunting. I think I'm down to needing 4 Rosies to fill the silver book and my Merc book is doing worse than Walker but I really don't do many dimes compared to halves. Its a nice diversion when I can fill an empty spot, or upgrad an ugly coin with a nicer specimen. HH all, Mark
